Things are changing quickly. I started drafting this blog post on Monday morning and at that time there was only one presumptive positive case on Maui. Today is Friday, this is the 6th revision of this post and there are now 5 presumptive cases on Maui. More will be announced as we start testing more.
We are dealing with an emerging, rapidly evolving situation, not only here on our island, but all over the world. Therefore, instead of trying to give an update on what is going on here on Maui, and Hawaii in general, I am going to share with you a list of websites where you can get the current reliable updates:

A Luxury snorkel Tour with Ali’i Nui Maui
SNORKELING WITH ALI’I NUI MAUI
Have you ever dreamed of snorkeling in Hawaii? There are many options to make this dream a reality, from bringing your own snorkel gear from home, to renting equipment at a local surf shop to booking a tour. Recently my best friend since college came out to Maui to celebrate our milestone birthdays. It’s whale season here on Maui and I knew that enjoying a snorkel tour, and possibly seeing whales playing in the Pacific, would give us both memories to last a lifetime.
We were able to book a tour with the amazing Ali’i Nui Maui. I’d heard great things about this luxury catamaran company from clients, and was excited to see for myself.
MORE THAN SNORKELING
Ali’i Nui offers several tours: snorkel sails, whale watches & sunset dinner cruises. We chose the Maui Deluxe Snorkel Sail, and started our day before sunrise, meeting at Ma’alaea Harbor to climb about their beautiful catamaran. Once aboard, we were offered a lovely breakfast bar.
After a warm welcome by the captain and staff, we were out to sea, well, out to Molokini, at least. The sun was rising as the boat took us from the harbor to the beautiful crescent-shaped snorkel spot.
Some whales came out to play and wow us with their antics along the way. We stopped to admire them, with people gathering at the front of the catamaran.
A petite older lady stood next to me and mumbled under her breath how “all the tall people” were standing up front. Just as she finished her sentence, two whales swam directly next to us, creating a mini-rainbow with their splashes. It was truly a magical Maui moment. No time for photos, only time to soak in the incredible presence of these creatures.
SNORKELING AND SATISFYING SNACKS
Once we arrived to Molokini we had the option to snorkel or scuba dive (extra cost) and wet suits were provided. The water was wild that day, but I felt extra safe because Ali’i Nui had two lifeguards watching us in the water, as well as provided floaties & life jackets for whomever wanted them. We got to see all kinds of tropical fish at Molokini! The water was a bit rough that day, so we went to a special place toward West Maui called Talking Rocks. There were more tropical fish, sea turtles and even a manta ray joined the party!
I enjoyed the fresh snacks and homemade ginger ale atop the catamaran during the second snorkel. It was fun watching more whales play and my college bestie had a blast in the water. When everyone got out of the water there were hot showers and towels provided for us to wash off the saltwater.
After both snorkels, the food didn’t stop there! A yummy BBQ lunch, with salads and dips & sides galore awaited us. The day was magical, from sunrise to post-snorkel glow time. The captain and crew were top-notch and the word “luxury” fit this tour perfectly.
If you’re looking for a snorkel excursion here on Maui, I highly recommend Ali’i Nui Maui. Check them out at aliinuimaui.com.

Beach Clean-Up 2020
Whether you live on Maui or love to vacation on Maui, taking care of the beaches is essential. I, Jenny, recently became involved with Surfrider Foundation Maui as the volunteer Social Media Coordinator. Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.
Every 3rd Saturday of the month, Surfrider Maui hosts a Beach Clean Up, along with a local business. January 2020 we saw our largest volunteer turn-out, with over 160 volunteers helping clean up Sugar Beach in Kihei, HI. It was incredible seeing the community come together and make a huge impact in one morning of service. We were able to collect over 3000 pounds of trash that day! Amazing! If you live on Maui or plan to visit this month, the next Beach Clean Up is hosted by Fork & Salad and will be located at Kahului Harbor. See details above. You can find Surfrider Maui on Facebook, Instagram and https://maui.surfrider.org/. Protect what you love!

An unexpected swim date with Santa!
Last Spring, our daughter and I met up with some friends at Baby Beach in Lahaina, Hawaii. After a while an unexpected visitor rolled up on his red bike, decked out for Christmas — to our delight it was a beachy Santa! You never know what may happen while living on a tiny rock in the Pacific. Sometimes it means you get to swim with the man in the red suit, ahem, red swim trunks!
For those not lucky enough to swim with Santa, on Christmas Eve, be sure to catch him arrive by outrigger canoe! Click here for our holiday calendar.
